Join us as at\u00a0The James Joyce Centre<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>on\u00a0Satuday, June 14th at 2pm<\/strong>\u00a0for an afternoon of poetry featuring two contemporary Irish authors from\u00a0Macha Press<\/strong><\/a>, a new all-island publisher whose work, in a Joycean spirit, opens up new ground and new readerships in Irish literature.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eilish Martin<\/strong>\u2019s third collection, ! All\u2019arme \/ ? And what\u2026 if not<\/strong><\/em>, is at once experimental and intercultural work that manifests Joyce\u2019s legacy of locating Irish writing in a wider European context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crowd Work<\/strong><\/em> is Sam Furlong<\/strong>\u2019s debut poetry collection. Like Joyce’s work, it brings timely insights into the embodied nature of our lives, as we jostle, mingle, and rub up against each other in the \u2018crowd work\u2019 of social, sexual and political relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macha Press<\/strong> was recently founded by seven poets, each with manifold areas of practice. All the founders are currently based on the island of Ireland but each has a visionary reach that is integral to the international and trans-generational character of Macha. The name resounds with the eponymous (and pregnant) goddess who runs through the Ulster Cycle; Scottish makar (poet); as well as the Irish and Scottish Gaelic for a geographic \u201cplain\u201d. The word “macha” has different meanings across cultures and languages that play on tropes of both fertility and power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will feature readings by Martin and Furlong and a Q&A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is free but booking is essential.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bloomsday Festival<\/strong><\/a> is organised by The James Joyce Centre<\/strong><\/a> in partnership with F\u00e1ilte Ireland, Olhausen’s Sausages, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
