We develop activities in partnership with organisations from different sectors and to reach audiences who may not previously have taken part in cultural institutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Courses<\/h2>\n<div>\n<h1 data-id=\"template-cXZTyFpw#1-0-0-0\" data-element=\"\" uk-scrollspy-class=\"\" class=\"uk-scrollspy-inview\">Ireland on Stage and Screen 2026<\/h1>\n<h3>Led by Dr. Caroline Elbay<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>7 January &#8211; 11 February 2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This six-week course investigates and challenges iconic representations of modern Ireland on both stage and screen. As a nation and a people oft represented as permanently oscillating between the poles of \u2018Paddy Sad\/Paddy Mad\u2019 (Lady Morgan) in both musical and theatrical representation, this course invites participants to engage, experience, analyse, and discuss the multifaceted themes and issues (including, but not limited to, identity, language, war\/conflict, the revolutionary period, sexuality, religion, the supernatural, friendship, family, music, and marginalisation) addressed by authors, directors, playwrights and screenwriters ranging from Brian Friel, Sean O\u2019Casey, John B. Keane, and Marina Carr.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a wide variety of theatre masterworks, the course will also include and consider representations of Ireland and the Irish contained in Martin McDonagh\u2019s award-winning film <em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>, together with Enda Walsh\u2019s masterful adaptation of Claire Keegan\u2019s novel <em>Small Things Like These<\/em>. Newman<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>will lead a six-week course on James Joyce\u2019s groundbreaking first novel,\u00a0<em><strong>A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Published in 1916,\u00a0<em>A Portrait <\/em>covers many areas: a coming-of-age story (<em>bildungsroman<\/em>), a snapshot of Ireland at the turn of the 20th century, an examination of religious, historical, and national forces on the individual, a penetrating insight into the human psyche, a foundational work of Modernism, a fictional treatise on aesthetics and youth \u2014 among others. It is at once personal and universal, touching and shocking, beautiful and revolting.<\/p>\n<p>This course will go through the novel in detail. Starting on<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Wednesday, 5 November 2025<\/strong>, we will examine the laboured production of the novel as well as its historical and literary influences and other supplementary material. His latest publications are the novels <em>Snow<\/em> and <em>Mrs Osmond, and Times Pieces: A Dublin Memoi<\/em>r. Joyce in <em>Ulysses<\/em> tells us \u201cFind MC\u201d\u2014 the pseudonymous letter partner of Leopold Bloom (posing as Henry Flower) in <em>Ulysses<\/em>. To commemorate the occasion, James Joyce Research Scholar, Terence Killeen presents an online lecture on Joyce&#8217;s relationship with Clancy and also reflecting on Clancy&#8217;s career in its own right. Through performance, song and storytelling, they bring to life the child characters in Joyce\u2019s <em>Ulysses<\/em> and explain the elements at the heart of the book \u2013 the importance of curiosity and learning, to respect others, the trickiness of family relationships and love and why everyone needs a place to call home. The performance lasts approximately 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2021, we welcomed 6th Class from the Central Model Senior School, to the James Joyce Centre. They were given a short introduction to the writer James Joyce followed by a performance of &#8216;Do Fish Ever Get Seasick&#8217;. The students got to asks questions about the show and everyone got a copy of <em>JAMJOY<\/em>, the James Joyce activity book.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The students really enjoyed their visit! As a nation and a people oft represented as permanently oscillating between the poles of \\u2018Paddy Sad\\\/Paddy Mad\\u2019 (Lady Morgan) in both musical and theatrical representation, this course invites participants to engage, experience, analyse, and discuss the multifaceted themes and issues (including, but not limited to, identity, language, war\\\/conflict, the revolutionary period, sexuality, religion, the supernatural, friendship, family, music, and marginalisation) addressed by authors, directors, playwrights and screenwriters ranging from Brian Friel, Sean O\\u2019Casey, John B. It is at once personal and universal, touching and shocking, beautiful and revolting.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>This course will go through the novel in detail. Through performance, song and storytelling, they bring to life the child characters in Joyce\\u2019s <em>Ulysses<\\\/em> and explain the elements at the heart of the book \\u2013 the importance of curiosity and learning, to respect others, the trickiness of family relationships and love and why everyone needs a place to call home. The performance lasts approximately 45 minutes.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>In September 2021, we welcomed 6th Class from the Central Model Senior School, to the James Joyce Centre. They were given a short introduction to the writer James Joyce followed by a performance of 'Do Fish Ever Get Seasick'. The students got to asks questions about the show and everyone got a copy of <em>JAMJOY<\\\/em>, the James Joyce activity book.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>\\u2018The students really enjoyed their visit!
